Is it "you have to stay close to her", "you have to wait for her" or "you have to be as quick as her"?

    I think the English translation that would be best is "When mom's shopping you have to keep up". I think that implies keeping up the (her) pace and stay close, otherwise when she keeps walking you'll lose sight of her and get lost.
