Hello,
In Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles Maturin, there is a saying of Homer as follows (I thougt it might bu Greek):

Τηλε μειργουσι ψυχαι, ειδοωλα καμοντων.

Can you help what means in English?

The exact quote is: Τῆλέ με εἴργουσι ψυχαὶ εἴδωλα καμόντων (Iliad, Book 23). It means (and I'm combining two translations here):

the souls, the shadows of burnt-out dead, hold me off at a distance
