The translataion of...

"En traversant alors que le feu était rouge pour lui, le piéton a failli se faire tailler un short."

... should not be...

"Crossing the road when the lights were against him, the pedestrian nearly had a close shave."

Rather, it should be: "Crossing the road when the lights were against him, the pedestrian had a close shave."

In sum, don't write "nearly." If you don't trust me on this, see cambridge.org's example:
"I had a close shave this morning - some idiot almost knocked me off my bike. "
