There is a stag in the snow. Blink and he will vanish. Was he a stag at all or was he something else? Was he a sentiment hanging unspoken or a path not taken or a closed door left unopened?

The Starless Sea (a novel) by Erin Morgenstern

What does hanging in this context mean?

Is it the same as lingering?

Thank you.

Sentiment hanging unspoken - everyone has this sentiment and it seems everyone might put it in words any moment now, bot nobody is - it hangs unspoken.

Yes, it is like lingering. "Hanging" is a somewhat poetic way of describing the presence of this intangible sentiment. "Floating" would have been another possibility.
